ISTANBUL — A powerful earthquake in southern Turkey early Monday leveled residential buildings and killed dozens across Turkey and northern Syria, officials said.
Turkey’s disaster and emergency management agency said 76 people had been killed and more than 400 injured, numbers that were likely to rise as rescuers searched flattened buildings across southern Turkey. Syria’s deputy health minister reported 42 killed and 200 injured in Aleppo, Hama and Latakia, according to state media.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake — felt as far away as Lebanon, Jordan and Israel — occurred in Nurdagi, about 40 miles west of the Turkish city of Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The initial quake was followed by powerful aftershocks.
