Can Joran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for New York mayor in the United States, become New Yorks first ‘Muslim socialist’ mayor by breaking through interference from Donald Trump, the US president seen as the most powerful person in the world, and Elon Musk, the richest person in the world and Tesla CEO.
The New York mayoral election held on the 4th is formally a three-way race among Mamdani , Curtis Sliwa , and Andrew Cuomo , but it is in effect a fight between ‘Mamdani and his foes’. In a rare scene, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, which are showing the worst division ever, even joined hands with one mind to block Mamdanis victory. The Republican Party, throughout the campaign, urged its own candidate Sliwa to withdraw in order to put forward Cuomo as the foil to Mamdani. Cuomo is a mainstream Democratic figure who ran as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Since Sliwa, who is running last in support, has virtually no path to victory, their calculation was that Republican votes should be shifted to the Democrat Cuomo to stop Mamdani. However, Sliwa, despite all-out pressure from the Republican Party, insisted on staying in the race, saying, “I will never join hands with Cuomo”. In the end, President Trump stepped in at the last minute. On the 3rd, one day before the election, he posted on social media to rally his supporters, saying, “Whether or not you like Cuomo personally, there is no choice. Vote for him”. President Trump asserted, “If Mamdani wins, New York City will be a complete disaster economically and socially”, adding, “It is better for a Democratic candidate with a record of success to win than an inexperienced communist”. Musk also joined in. That day, he posted on X to his 229 million followers, urging, “Supporting Sliwa, the Republican candidate, only cements Mamdanis victory”, and “Do not forget that voting for Sliwa is the same as voting for Mamdani”. On a podcast appearance earlier, Musk criticized, “We should acknowledge that Mamdani can light up the stage, but he is nothing more than a charismatic con artist”. Mamdani continued, “President Trump and Cuomo share the same donors, the same vision, and a sense that they will not be punished”, arguing, “The MAGA movement embracing Cuomo shows that Cuomo would be the best mayor for the Trump administration, not the best mayor for New York City”. As if illustrating the strong odds of victory for New York mayoral candidate Joran Mamdani, reporters surround him with no space to step. However, the anti-Mamdani camp also appears to be coalescing at the last minute. In the latest survey by polling firm AtlasIntel , the gap between Mamdani and Cuomo narrowed to 5 percentage points. Sliwa registered 16%. AtlasIntel is regarded as the polling firm that best predicted the 2024 presidential election, which ended in a landslide for Trump. The shrinking gap suggests Republican votes for Sliwa may be shifting quickly to Cuomo. Perhaps out of concern over this possibility, Tamari, a volunteer with the Mamdani campaign, told the Kyunghyang Shinmun, “Just as no one expected Mamdani to defeat Cuomo in the Democratic primary, even if Mamdani is now far ahead, we will not know until the lid is lifted”, adding, “We will not be complacent and will do our best until the very end”.
