The rescue initially agreed to take in four roosters. Then, a truck arrived with 60 viciously-trained birds.

“My volunteer called me and said, ‘Oh, there’s a couple more than what you had thought,’” Laurie Zaleski, founder of Funny Farm Rescue and Sanctuary said on Wednesday.

“The razor was almost like an earring but around the bone of their arm, it was horrible,” Zaleski said. “I’ve never seen that before in my life.” The sanctuary called in reinforcements and found more cages so they could take in all 60 roosters, knowing it was unlikely they would find homes elsewhere. For the past few weeks, Funny Farm has been caring for and rehabilitating dozens of fighting roosters.

Until the birds are rehabilitated and settled, Zaleski is the only one who can feed them to ensure none of the volunteers are injured, she said. The sanctuary did not disclose the location of the alleged cockfighting ring where the roosters were seized because of an ongoing criminal investigation. The group also declined to say who dropped off the animals or provided the initial incorrect count of the number of birds.from a large alleged cockfighting ring at a Galloway Township home.
