Casey Duby is an avid TV writer, watcher, and reviewer. She graduated from Emerson College with a film degree, and has worked in television ever since

In the wake of their hit limited series, Wayward, comedian Mae Martin has become known as a force in TV, but the psychological thriller wasn't Martin's first rodeo. In 2020, Martin, who goes by they/them pronouns, created, wrote, and starred in another Netflix series: the emotionally and comedically perfect Feel Good.

While Martin is best known as a stand-up comic, Feel Good is arguably the best depiction of their sense of humor. In everything from their stand-up to their Wayward character, Alex, Mae Martin's persona has an endearing awkwardness, but nowhere does it fit more perfectly than in Feel Good. Feel Good Is A Perfect Combination Of Humor And Emotion Feel Good primarily follows the heartwarming and turbulent relationship between Mae and their girlfriend George . Mae's personal baggage often becomes an obstacle in their relationship with George, but their characteristic earnestness allows even their darkest moments to be funny, sweet, and understandable. George taps right into Mae's unique sense of humor, making them both feel realistic and compatible. Their chemistry drives the tension as it's impossible not to root for their relationship. Rounding out the Feel Good cast is Lisa Kudrow, who is truly at the top of her comedy game as Mae's mom, Linda. Kudrow cuts every laugh with motherly love that clearly sits just beneath the surface. Feel Good Took Inspiration From Mae Martin's Real Life Mae Martin's Feel Good persona is a budding stand-up comic, but the show's real-life parallels stretch much closer to home. The biggest roadblock to Mae and George's relationship is Mae's addiction recovery and their general tendency towards self-sabotaging behaviors. In real life, Martin has been open about their struggles with substance abuse. Feel Good explores Mae's road to healing and coming face-to-face with their root wound: a traumatic teenage experience with an older male comic. In past stand-up sets, Martin has alluded to experiences of sexual assault. Given the deeply personal nature of the story, there could be no better person to tell it than Martin themself. Martin's crystal clear perception of themself and the general nature of human emotion drives Feel Good with a confident, inimitable voice. Everything from Mae's love life to their relationship with their parents to the closure they finally find with their abuser is more than observant commentary. It's a raw, lived-in, captivating story from the heart. The unique tone of the series, given its often heavy subject matter, could only be achieved by a skilled comedian. Martin uses every tool in their toolbox to truly shine in Feel Good. More Shows Like Feel Good May Be On The Horizon On February 4th, Martin and Netflix announced that Martin had signed a first-look deal with the streamer . While there aren't any details of specific projects in the works yet, the deal will involve Martin creating and developing new TV projects as well as a new stand-up special. With Feel Good hitting so close to Martin, the show is a solid baseline for their writing and storytelling style. While they've already demonstrated a clear range with the likes of Wayward, it's plausible to think — and hope — that more series of Feel Good's caliber will be coming soon.
