Migraine isn’t just “a bad headache” you can power through.

“Once the day gets going, it is very easy to get caught up in the things that distract you from taking good care of yourself, and there are days when I look up from my computer and realize I had a hard workout in the morning, maybe had a quick snack after, but hours have gone by and I haven’t had a real meal or enough water,” Albert tells SELF.

“I see being on top of these things as self-care because it forces me to slow down and prioritize my own health and well-being as opposed to ensuring I’m being productive every second or getting to every meeting exactly on time,” Albert says. For Lindsay Mann, 26, exercise is incredibly important. It gives her a routine and helps her feel stronger and more confident in her body.

Mann has found, though, that she can still work toward fitness goals even when she does have to take some unexpected time off: One of her goals for this year was to complete a 5K—which she achieved, despite having had to skip several training days to take care of herself. For Chelsea S., 32, who was diagnosed with migraine at age 27, sleep deprivation is a huge migraine trigger. She aims to get 10 hours of sleep each night; if she doesn’t, she finds she is more likely to feel an attack coming on.

“Keeping my room cool, dark, and quiet is key, as I’m sensitive to light and noise and sometimes feel hot as a side effect from my medications,” she says. “I also won’t use any screens or lights in bed and always put my phone on ‘do not disturb’ mode when I'm sleeping,” she says. If it’s colder outside, she has heated blankets and a heating pad on hand so that she can adjust and get perfectly comfortable for a solid snooze.
