Lesko finally accepted his diagnosis after experiencing its depressive aspect. After two to three months of mania and six months of awful, he took a one-year medical leave from school and completed an intensive mental health outpatient program. Having a positive experience with a counselor there motivated him to pursue his master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling.

For Lesko, the most important part of treatment was realizing that he’ll live with bipolar I forever, even when the symptoms are well managed. “I would have benefited from hearing that as I was really starting to put in the work of recovering and coming to terms with being a ‘bipolar guy,’” he says. “It’s a chronic illness, and it’s something that I always have to deal with, but it also just becomes second nature and you get better and better at it because you have to.
