the power suddenly goes out across New York City, and as the sun goes down, a group of teenagers have to figure out how they’re going to survive without electricity and also make it to a Brooklyn block party.features a series of interconnected short stories told from the point of view of several Black teens, and the novel is written by six standout YA authors: Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon.

The current landscape of YA fiction is burgeoning with authors dedicated to telling Black narratives in a wide range of genres including fantasy, science fiction, and romance. All six authors who contributed toduring the pandemic have written for young people, but felt passionate about this particular project because it removes the usual trauma attached to Black American love stories. The characters simply fall in love.

“The main premise of ‘Mask Off’ is that we all have parts of ourselves that we hide. We get these messages from so many places in the world about who you’re supposed to be. I had that experience in high school, where it was not okay to be openly queer,” Stone says about her chapter. Adding, “Things have changed, but in these microcosms, there are still spaces where it isn’t okay.
