Six people were arrested and two suspicious devices were found in the vicinity of Gracie Mansion at a protest Saturday organized by a pardoned Jan. 6 rioter. The protest, which happened during Ramadan, called "Stop the Islamic takeover of New York City" was led by Jake Lang, a far-right influencer.
He promoted the protest on social media which drew about 20 participants. A counter protest, "Run the Nazis out of New York City, Stand Against Hate" happened simultaneously, drawing roughly 125 participants at its peak.About 20 minutes later, Emir Balat, an 18-year-old counter protester, lit and threw an ignited device near the protest area. Witnesses saw flames and smoke as it traveled through the air before it hit a barrier and extinguished itself, according to police commissioner Jessica Tisch. Balat and another man tentatively identified as Ibrahim Nikk, 19, were arrested for handling and employing the devices which the NYPD Bomb Squad found to be jars wrapped in black tape with nuts, bolts, screws and hobby fuse that could be lit. The Bomb Squad is administering further testing to determine whether the devices were explosives or hoaxes. Three others were arrested at the protests for disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic. There were no injuries.Mamdani's press secretary, Joe Calvello, gave the following statement to News 12: “The “Crusade Against Islamification” gathering held outside Gracie Mansion today by Jake Lang, a vile white supremacist, was despicable and Islamophobic. Thankfully, the Mayor and the First Lady are both safe, though the events are a stark reminder of the threats they both face regularly. The Mayor has spoken with Police Commissioner Tisch, and the NYPD is actively investigating the protest, counter-protest, and suspicious devices discovered outside Gracie Mansion.”
