Fifty-three people were killed and 162 others injured in road accidents on Myanmar's Yangon-Mandalay expressway in the first half of 2023, the Nay Pyi Taw Expressway Traffic Police Force said on Monday. ManilaBulletin
A total of 83 road crashes have occurred on the busiest highway in Myanmar between January and June this year, causing damage worth 288.58 million kyats , it said.
Human errors such as overspeeding, negligent driving, and drowsy driving are mostly blamed for highway accidents in the country, it added. In order to reduce traffic accidents, the traffic police were conducting awareness programs and enforce traffic laws. During the six months, a total of 6,526 people were charged with overspeeding, while an additional 2,028 were charged for failing to wear seatbelts, it said.
