The 520 Montlake Bridge Project is nearly finished after five years of construction, with most features open to the public. The 520 Montlake Bridge Project is nearing completion after five years of construction. The project widened the 520 freeway from the floating bridge to Montlake and added a new 3-acre lid over the freeway at Montlake. A new bike and pedestrian bridge has been built, along with improved access on and off the freeway. Montlake Boulevard has also been upgraded.
Steve Peer, a spokesperson for the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT), confirmed that all lanes and trails on the lid are open, as is the new bike and pedestrian bridge. Peer noted that the lid, while generally finished, still requires some landscaping and adjustments to the lighting and fire suppression system, which will involve some nighttime closures in January. Metro has yet to begin service on the lid, as they need to finalize some operational details. They anticipate full functionality by the first quarter of next year. WSDOT also constructed a new reversible bus and HOV lane between 520 and the I-5 Express Lanes. This lane, however, will not open until the final segment of the project is finished in approximately five years. This delay is due to the lane traversing an active construction zone
