After Liverpool missed out on the transfer of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, Liverpool need to move on to their next transfer priority
Liverpool have yet to make a signing under new head coach Arne Slot as the Premier League campaign begins with a trip to Ipswich Town on Saturday. The Reds were left disappointed after Martin Zubimendi turned down an offer in order to continue at his boyhood club Real Sociedad.
Stephen Killen Liverpool still have to target a new defensive midfielder. It appears that Slot wants a player more suited to the role of the pivot that can receive the ball under pressure. It is an important, and also exciting, time for Gravenberch who is likely to deputise in midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister. But Liverpool can't afford to lose the creativity of Jones or Szoboszlai from playing further back.
That may not be the case at centre-back if, as expected, Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams and Sepp van den Berg depart this month. Joel Matip has gone, and the club barely managed to make it work with only Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah and Virgil van Dijk last season. Kieran Horn Martin Zubimendi turning down a move to Liverpool should change Arne Slot's transfer priority. The Reds have a number of options in midfield and Zubimendi was clearly a target identified with a unique set of skills and no alternative, at a similar price, is seemingly available.
