Scientists in China have managed to revive brain activity in pigs nearly an hour after circulation ceased, thanks to the liver.
The key to the experiment’s success lies in incorporating the liver into a life support system known as liver-assisted brain normothermic machine perfusion.Scientists in China have managed to revive brain activity in pigs nearly an hour after circulation ceased, thanks to the surprising involvement of the liver.
The research team, led by Dr. Xiaoshun He at Sun Yat-Sen University, experimented with the brains of 17 Tibetan minipigs to investigate how the liver might influence brain recovery. When the heart stops, blood flow to the brain is halted, leading to ischemia—a deprivation of oxygen and nutrients. Within just a few minutes, brain cells begin to die, making resuscitation highly time-sensitive.
In the first set of experiments, the scientists subjected the pigs to 30 minutes of brain ischemia, with one group also experiencing liver ischemia. The group that had intact liver function fared much better, showing significantly less brain damage than those without liver support. The key to the experiment’s success lies in incorporating the liver into a life support system known as liver-assisted brain normothermic machine perfusion .
Without liver assistance, the brains quickly deteriorated, showing swelling, cellular damage, and decreased electrical activity. In contrast, the liver-assisted brains showed less swelling, healthier neurons, and restored brain waves, which are critical markers of functional brain activity.
