Katniss' character was greatly watered down in the Hunger Games movies for the sake of time and likability and it did her book counterpart no justice.
The Hunger Games movies were a stunning adaptation of the book series by Suzanne Collins, but they failed Katniss Everdeen's character in several ways. It's nearly impossible to include all the nuances of a character or plot from a novel into a movie since time restrictions simply don't allow it. Screenwriters and directors must pick and choose what is included and find creative ways to communicate concepts described in a book characters' inner dialogue.
Katniss is known in the Hunger Games books for being abrasive and difficult to like. Those that knew her well, like Peeta and Prim, recognized that this was only a defense mechanism that allowed Katniss to focus on survival. Still, the movies couldn't bring this entirely to the screen since, without a deep dive into who Katniss was behind the mask, she might have come across as unlikable to audiences.
People like Prim and Peeta might have recognized the goodness in Katniss, but in the Hunger Games books, Haymitch was the only one who understood her darkness. Katniss often mentioned that they were alike. They would fight, throw insults at each other, and avoid each other's company if they could, but when it came to making difficult decisions, Katniss knew Haymitch understood her. Without this complicated dynamic in the Hunger Games movies, their relationship was simply lacking.
2 The Hunger Games Movies Cut Katniss’ Symbolic Singing Talent Another important thing that Katniss' father taught her was how to sing. He was said to have such a beautiful voice that the birds would stop to listen. In the Hunger Games books, he passed this skill on to his daughter. He taught her the "Deep in the Meadow" song and the famous "Hanging Tree" song featured in the movies.
