Laura Hughes, 31, who lives with chronic intractable migraine and is a patient advocate with the nonprofit, can relate. “I sometimes feel guilty about not being able to be completely present with my daughter,” she tells SELF. “But I try to find ways to be with her that work for me even when I’m in pain, like putting pillows on the floor and laying down next to her while she plays.”
One way to stop feelings of guilt is to avoid comparing yourself to other parents who don’t have migraine disease. “I’m not like other able-bodied parents,” says Shivaramakrishnan. “I’ve had to accept that migraine is a disease I have to live with, and I’ve learned to focus on the things I can do for my daughter rather than the things I can’t.”
