Marianne’s fringe deserves as much recognition as her leading man Connell’s chain.
How Marianne wears her hair, which evolves from a schoolgirl-innocent micro-fringe to brow-tickling bangs as the show progresses, reflects her mindset – something many of us can relate to. We often turn our attention to our hair in times of emotional turmoil and so does Marianne, a millennial queen doing wholly millennial things.
“When I first met Daisy [Edgar-Jones, who plays Marianne] she did have a fringe, but she didn’t have a very good fringe,” says Sandra Kelly, the hair designer on the show. “A fringe can be so good but they’re hard to do… but I do believe everyone should have a fringe at one time in their life.” Kelly explains that Marianne wore three different fringes over the course of the show’s 12 episodes, starting with that youthful chop that opened up her face.
“When she starts off, at school, she has this short, choppy, arched fringe with long hair,” says Kelly. “We wanted to make it look like she didn’t really bother with herself much, but equally make her look a bit arty and a bit quirky, especially compared to the other girls in the school. This fringe was specifically for that.
Then there’s the fringe she wears as a student at Trinity College Dublin, the place where she’s come into her own, having acquired a slew of smart friends and a penchant for smudgy eyeliner. This fringe spells freedom. “It’s a much more square, heavier fringe that’s still slightly choppy, and with a little balayage at the ends of her hair.
