Did you know that the most iconic part of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech was improvised?
The full name was the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom
The initial goal of the march was to push for equal access to jobs and a federal law banning employment discrimination, which was legal prior to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Jones said. Organizers also wanted the federal government to raise the minimum wage and create a jobs program for all unemployed workers.
"Those objections did not really prevail in part because A. Philip Randolph recognized how important it was to have Bayard Rustin in the leadership role of the march," Jones said."It was also in part because Rustin himself really was completely unapologetic. He refused to make the argument that his sexuality had any bearing on his ability to be an effective organizer.
"After the march it created a really profound I think movement among some of the really prominent Black women’s leaders to push much more powerfully for including women in the leadership," Jones said.Lewis was the youngest speaker at the march representing the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, whose members collectively helped him write his speech. Jones said copies of the speech were circulated the night before the march which raised some red flags with organizers.

Protest March Passing Outside Apartment Close Enough For Man To Say He ParticipatedYONKERS, NY—Expressing his excitement that the demonstration was occurring nearby, local man Ted Shriver was reportedly thrilled Tuesday after a Black Lives Matter protest march passed close enough to his apartment for him to claim he participated in it. “This is great, I can look out my window and pump my fists in the air as marchers walk by and no one can say I wasn’t technically involved,” said Shriver, confirming that hastily scrawling “BLM” on a piece of paper and waving it out the window as the march turned down his block made him a de facto activist. “Someday, if my kids ask me where I was during this crucial moment in American history, I can say that I took part in a protest and technically it will be true! And while I’m not actually sure any of the other marchers saw me, they could probably feel my moral support.” At press time, Shriver was reportedly overjoyed to get a second chance to participate in a demonstration after a Proud Boys counter-protest passed by his apartment shortly after. \n
