No. 14 Texas A&M entered a dogfight with Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon and emerged with a gritty 34-24 win in Starkville, Miss.

Texas A&M defensive lineman Nic Scourton reacts during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Mississippi State Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, in Starkville, Miss. in Starkville, Miss. The Aggies didn’t play the prettiest game, but came away with a victory against a Bulldog program that has been the team’s Achilles heel over the past decade.

A&M looked like it could be joining the SEC’s growing list of upset teams when it entered halftime with just a 21-17 lead. The Aggies buckled down in the second half and captured just their second win at Davis Wade Stadium in their last six visits.Similar to the 10-game road losing streak A&M snapped with its win over Florida to open conference play, Saturday’s success is a mark of the progress being made in coach.

Heading into the break, Elko said the Aggies had to improve upon “everything” in the second half, and they heeded his words. The Bulldogs were limited to just a touchdown in the final 30 minutes, with the score coming after Mississippi State took over at the A&M 12-yard line following a Weigman interception. The Bulldogs picked up only 94 yards in the second half with three turnovers on downs and two punts beyond the short touchdown.
