He recorded it at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio in Malibu, Calif.
This started from Mesoamerican and Native American flutes, about seven years ago. I heard someone playing it, loved the tone of it, and I would be so excited about playing every day, I would just carry my flute around and walk and hike with it.I’ll play flute . It started with me playing at stoplights, and that turned into me actually driving and playing, like I’ll steer the steering wheel with my knees and play flute. I know. It’s very dangerous, but I can’t help it.
I totally was. And I hate that people think that it’s a joke, or I’m trolling. In my whole career, I’ve kind of gone how the wind has blown. Like every time we’ve come out with an album, at times people have been like “What the f---?” Every time I finished an Outkast album, I would sit with my favorite older cousin in the car and let him listen to it, and every time we finished, he would be like “Man! I’m so scared for you.” And that’s when I knew that it was in a good place.
