5 Long Beach artists honored at weeklong ‘In Memoriam’ exhibition and auction

The work of these late Long Beach artists will be on display and for sale during a weeklong exhibition

“This is going to be real quality work from esteemed artists that were part of the community, and some of them with worldwide reputations,” she added.The auction will also help bring art to others in Long Beach since 10 percent of the proceeds will go to Able ARTS Works, a Long Beach-based nonprofit art organization that provides arts programs to people with disabilities.

The exhibition is taking place at a gallery named after Briggs; it was once the studio where he created photorealistic paintings that often depicted places throughout Long Beach. He was a teacher for the Long Beach Unified School District for decades and his work is included in the permanent collection of theJoining Briggs’ work will be pieces by Cretara, who was a figurative painter and art professor at Cal State Long Beach.

Hitchcock was an acrylic painter, watercolorist and sculptor who taught art at Cal State Long Beach. Hisat places like the National Museum of Watercolor in Mexico and the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana Lopez learned to be an artist in Long Beach, receiving undergraduate and graduate fine art degrees from Cal State Long Beach and he taught drawing and painting for more than 30 at Rio Hondo College in Whittier.

Werlick was a painter and sculptor who taught sculpture at Cal State Long Beach for more than 30 years.“We want to keep their memories alive and their work alive and I think having a memorial exhibit and auction would be a good way to find new homes for these pieces,” Christjansen said.Where: LBCG/Rod Briggs Gallery, 2221 E.
