Mario's record-breaking box office success won't be surpassed anytime soon, but Disney still has some upcoming hits to reclaim the studio's titles.
Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie is breaking box office records for animated movies once held by Disney, but five upcoming movies can help the studio reclaim its titles. While Disney has long been the highest-grossing studio when it comes to animated movies, Universal has notably given the House of Mouse a run for its money, especially since the pandemic.
Considering the first two installments in the franchise hold top-three spots on the list of highest-grossing animated films, Disney’s Frozen III has the best chance at breaking the box office records set by Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, Frozen III isn’t expected to be released until late 2025 or 2026, meaning it could be some time before Disney reclaims its animated box office throne.
Disney’s Toy Story 4 is the seventh-highest-grossing animated movie of all time with a $1.07 billion box office gross, followed closely by its Toy Story 3 at $1.06 billion. Since the main characters from the franchise continue to be popular with audiences, it stands to reason that Toy Story 5's box office would massively eclipse Lightyear, while also improving upon the financial performance of its billion dollar-earning direct predecessors.

DeSantis seeks to control Disney with state oversight powersGov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are ratcheting up pressure on Walt Disney World. They announced on Monday plans to introduce legislation that would end an exemption for Disney parks, allowing the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to inspect Disney rides. The announcement is the latest in a tit-for-tat between Disney and the governor that started last year when the entertainment giant publicly opposed the state’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. In retaliation, Florida lawmakers passed, and DeSantis signed, legislation reorganizing Disney World’s company-controlled government, allowing the governor to appoint the five members of the Board of Supervisors instead of Disney.
