Archaeologists in Israel have unearthed a 5,000-year-old city, rewriting the history of early urbanization.

Three years of meticulous investigation at Horvat Hoshem, a site initially discovered in 2021, have revealed a wealth of Early Bronze Age artifacts.A remarkable 5,000-year-old settlement in Israel has yielded some of the earliest known public buildings, offering a glimpse into the crucial period when complex human societies first emerged.

“The site uncovered in the Hoshem ruins is extraordinary not only because of its size, but because it reveals to us some of the first characteristics of the transition from village life to urban life,” the excavation managers stated. The ruins at Horvat Hoshem demonstrate that steps towards establishing major urban centers were already underway 5,000 years ago. Within a few generations, large cities with impressive buildings, including palaces, would emerge in the region.

“It is interesting to know that the many tools were placed here shortly before the entire site was abandoned. You can literally imagine the people who put down the dishes and leave them here,” a press release noted.Lowlands—may have been a temple designed for organized worship.
