The United Auto Workers union added the highly profitable General Motors plant to its strike as 5,000 workers walk out in Arlington, Texas.

UAW members cheer as employees walkout from the General Motors’ Fort Worth Parts Distribution Center, on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, in Roanoke.ARLINGTON — The United Auto Workers union added the highly profitable General Motors plant to its strike as 5,000 workers walked out Tuesday in Arlington, Texas.

Earlier this month, UAW president Shawn Fain said the UAW got General Motors to concede on future electric battery plant unionization by threatening to call a work stoppage at the company’s highly profitable Arlington assembly plant that produces full-size SUVs. He called it off when GM sent its offer minutes before he addressed UAW members.

The company also withdrew its previous full-year pretax earnings estimates, citing uncertainty over the length of the strike and how many factories would be shut downA strike by auto workers against General Motors is expected to cut pretax earnings by $800 million this year, and another $200 million per week after that, the company’s chief financial officer said.

And those figures include only factories that are on strike now with less than a third of the company’s workforce on the picket lines, so if more plants are added by the United Auto Workers union, the losses will pile up further, Jacobson told reporters. The first three weeks of the strike have cost the national economy $5.5 billion through losses to manufacturers, suppliers, dealers and wages, according to a 5,000 union workers at GM’ Arlington factory walk out as UAW escalates strike
