The 49ers (8-4) will vie for their sixth straight win Sunday when they and rookie quarterback Brock Purdy host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-6) and San Mateo native Tom Brady.
SANTA CLARA – Look, it’s not like Tom Brady got a gimmie in his NFL starting debut, either. On Sept. 30, 2001, Brady made his first career start against Peyton Manning.
“I’m going to be going up against those guys rather than Tom himself,” Purdy said. “But, it’s definitely still awesome to have Tom Brady come and play on the same field and compete against our team.” “I was lucky to grow up in the Bay Area at that time. It was just a great time,” Brady recalled this past week. “… When they skipped over me six times , I started hating the 49ers.”With a star-studded supporting cast, everyone is downplaying what Purdy must contribute other than serve as a turnover-free distributor. It won’t be that simple, but his unflinching resolve last game further convinced the 49ers they’re capable of a smooth transition from Garoppolo.
The Bucs will dare Purdy to beat them deep, when the prudent move would be to strike fast, hit receivers in stride between the hashmarks and begrudgingly accept a punt rather than force a turnover. Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and Jordan Mason should rotate as ball carriers and try to find lanes past an aggressive defense. That weekly plan is getting thwarted by stacked defensive fronts, however.
Fellow guard Aaron Banks grew up in the East Bay tracking Vea’s career, and he says the Bucs’ nose tackle moves especially well and uses his hands better than other big bodies the 49ers have encountered.Cornerback Charvarius Ward has faced Brady five times since 2018, highlighted by a game-clinching interception in that season’s AFC Championship Game – until a Dee Ford offside penalty overturned it. Anyhow, Ward is no stranger to a quarterback he says is “still the G.O.A.T.
