49ers QB Roll Call: Defense intercepts Sam Darnold for first time in camp
SANTA CLARA — The 49ers practiced for 1 1/2 hours Tuesday before they take an afternoon flight to Las Vegas, where they’ll resume practicing Thursday and Friday at the Raiders facility before Sunday’s preseason opener.After opening with four completions, Purdy’s next five throws went incomplete, including a drop by rookie tight end Cameron Latu, who also dropped one of Trey Lance’s throws.
Purdy’s best pass was a 25-yard liner over the middle to Brandon Aiyuk, but the next pass took that same flight path with minimal arc, resulting in a Fred Warner breakup against tight end Charlie Woerner. Two ensuing targets to Aiyuk went incomplete, one of which Charvarius Ward nearly nabbed for what could have been the cornerback corps’ first — FIRST! — interception of camp in full-team drills.Lance, for the first time in four practices, got the second-string snaps ahead of Sam Darnold. Only 1-of-5 passes were completed out the gate, but contributing to that ugly line were drops by Latu and Chris Conley.
Latu said after practice: “Drops are unacceptable. I have to fix those, get on the Jugs every day and catch the ball.”by reporters , his first pass of team drills Tuesday was swiped by safety Ji’Ayir Brown. That interception came after Darnold rolled left and unleashed a 40-yard spiral toward Ray-Ray McCloud down the left sideline, who was covered by Samuel Womack before Brown rushed in and beat everyone to the ball.
Darnold had back-to-back passes dropped by Willie Snead IV and Ronnie Bell. Bell rallied with three receptions from Darnold, who finished 5-of-9.Only five snaps went Allen’s way in third-string duty, and his only passes resulted in a drop by Isaiah Winstead and a catch by Deebo Samuel. Two of Allen’s early snaps were handoffs to running back Jeremy McNichols, who signed after a tryout and replaced undrafted rookie Ronald Awatt.
