The Panthers fired Rhule despite more than $40 million in guarantees left in his contract.
On Sunday, the Niners controlled every facet of the game. Their offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, allowing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and running back Jeff Wilson Jr. to have their best games of the season. On the other side of the ball, the Panthers offense looked like a lost cause.
The Panthers hired Rhule in 2020 after a successful head coaching tenure in the collegiate ranks at Temple and Baylor, enticing him with a seven-year contract. However, that success never translated to the NFL. Rhule had an 11-27 record with the Panthers and was clearly on the hot seat heading into Week 5. The feckless loss at home to the 49ers was the last straw.
