The 49ers and Eagles built championship rosters by relying on the draft and then targeting specific free agents and making big trades when necessary.

SANTA CLARA — The schemes may differ, but the 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles will arrive at the NFC Championship Game Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field having taken similar paths to get within one step of Super Bowl LVII.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” Shanahan said Thursday. “I don’t think we’re real similar. I think we look at things a little bit different. I think most teams are built that way.” Sirianni, hired before the 2021 season, has an offensive and play-calling background like Shanahan. The two are friendly but have never worked together. The 49ers and Eagles don’t seem to be in the market for the same free agents and the only crossover player is running back Trey Sermon — a fringe back with the Eagles as he was with the 49ers.

While both teams are on the lookout for undrafted free agents and fringe players who could make the roster, they are at the same time patient enough to wait it out of necessity. Both teams have cashed in on value after the first round of the draft was completed. Prominent 49ers include Kittle , linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw running back Elijah Mitchell and quarterback Brock Purdy .

The 49ers made one big free agent splash in the offseason, signing cornerback Charvarius Ward from the Kansas City Chiefs. When Shanahan and Lynch took over, one of the first free agent strikes was Pro Bowl fullback Kyle Juszczyk, whose skill set meshed perfectly with the offensive system.
