SANTA CLARA — With the 49ers coming with an inside linebacker blitz Sunday, second-year defensive end Drake Jackson was compromised.
Quarterback Trey Lance correctly identified the mismatch, and sensing a big play opportunity, let one loose for Mitchell. The pass was a bit of a wobbler, but it really didn’t matter because Jackson had stayed with Mitchell step for step. The ball fell incomplete.“That play, it just so happened I had to do what I had to do,” Jackson said. “It’s just the plays that we’re given. I don’t see us dropping like that, but whatever we have to do we’re going to do it.
It wasn’t what Jackson or the 49ers had in mind. Not for someone athletic enough to do backflips and leap out of swimming pools, landing on his feet. Then again, Jackson didn’t exactly maximize his skill set at USC, with 12 1/2 sacks in 25 games. The 49ers obviously won’t be counting on Jackson to do much dropping into coverage. He’ll be expected to rush the passer from the edge. Nick Bosa, once he agrees to a contract extension, will come from one side, with Jackson or Clelin Ferrell coming from the other.
Shanahan likes what he’s seen so far from Jackson and Ferrell, but noted, “Nothing really matters until we get the pads on and start doing a little more football.”
