The Great Tribune Takeout Night is set for April 12. From 6-7 p.m., we’ll go live on Facebook to announce the winners of the Readers’ Choice Food Awards and chat with some of our Critics’ Choice winners, too.
We hope you’ll show your support for the restaurants, bars, bakeries, breweries and other food businesses that have sustained and nourished us through yet another challenging year. On April 12, order takeout from your favorite neighborhood spot, or try someplace new. These 44 Chicago-area businesses are offering special Takeout Night deals, from half-off pizzas to a full steak dinner.

A Comedy of Errors: How a Small Leak Became the Great Loop Flood of 1992On the morning of April 13, 1992 as commuters were heading to their offices in Chicago’s Loop, fish were swimming in the basement of the Merchandise Mart. A strange flood was rising. But at street level, no one could actually see the flood. What began as a leak in a unique but mostly forgotten underground freight tunnel system became a two-week combination of comedy-of-errors and soap opera that cost almost $2 billion. Building basements were submerged, and life for some was temporarily disrupted. People and institutions were blamed, and unlikely heroes were made.
