On Feb. 7, 1985, “Witness,” which had brought a touch of Hollywood to Amish Country as it was filmed throughout Lancaster County the previous summer was shown at the Fulton Opera House.
Forty years ago, celebrities, Pennsylvania’s governor, local dignitaries and others gathered to witness the world-premiere screening of one of the most noteworthy films ever set and filmed in Lancaster County.
A horse and buggy from Abe’s Buggy Rides delivered Lancaster’s public works director, Alan Gesford, and his assistant, Susan O’Brien, to the red carpet at the Fulton. McGillis, who plays the Amish widow Book is attracted to, was one of the stars in attendance at the Fulton premiere — wearing a black pantsuit and a string of pearls. She arrived in the limousine that transported Gov. Dick Thornburgh and his wife, Ginny, to the premiere event.
Seven local eateries — The Harmony Inn, The Hoar House, The Loft, Market Fare Restaurant, P.J. Matthew & Co., Wickey’s at Steinman Park and Failla Italian Pastry Shop — supplied the food, the New Era reported. John King, a consultant on “Witness” who was also formerly Amish, told the New Era that the film is authentic and that director Weir asked him lots of questions about small details of Amish life.
