40-vehicle crash on I-81 in Schuylkill County started with snow squalls: authorities

Nearly two dozen people were taken to local hospitals with injuries, authorities said. More snow squalls are expected this afternoon in Pa.

Schuylkill County Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator said the crash was first reported around 10:30 a.m. near mile marker 116 toward Minersville as a snow squall was moving through the area. John Blickley said authorities believe the weather was a factor in the massive crash that involved an estimated 40 vehicles, including numerous tractor-trailers.

Fifty to 75 motorists who were not hurt were bussed to a reception area, Blickley said. The Red Cross is providing warming stations, blankets, food and drinks to them. Officials are working to reunify motorists with friends and family members, Blickley said. Blickley told PennLive he was not aware of any fatalities from the crash. He did not have details on the extent of injuries. Both sides of the I-81 remain shut down as of 2 p.m. because of the pile-up, as well as a second crash that happened hours later. WGAL reported a northbound crash around 12:55 p.m. between Exit 107/Route 209 Tremont/Tower City and Exit 119, Highridge Park Road. A snow squall warning is in effect until 3:15 p.m., so officials in affected areas are preparing for additional roadway difficulties. Blickley advised motorists who may be caught in a similar crash to get as far away from their wrecked vehicles as soon as they can safely do so.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
