4-in-10 cancer cases, and about half of all cancer deaths in Americans 30 and older could be attributed to modifiable risk factors, including cigarette smoking, overweight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, diet and infections
About half of all cancer deaths in Americans 30 and older could be attributed to risk factors such as cigarette smoking, overweight and physical inactivity, suggests a new American Cancer Society study. Regular exercise can help reduce the risk of a cancer diagnosis.
“Despite considerable declines in smoking prevalence during the past few decades, the number of lung cancer deaths attributable to cigarette smoking in the United States is alarming,” said“Interventions to help maintain healthy body weight and diet can also substantially reduce the number of cancer cases and deaths in the country, especially given the increasing incidence of several cancer types associated with excess body weight,” Islami said in a news release.
These risk factors included current and former cigarette smoking; secondhand smoke; excess body weight; alcohol consumption; consumption of red and processed meat; low consumption of fruits and vegetables, dietary fiber, and dietary calcium; physical inactivity; ultraviolet radiation; and various infections including hepatitis B and C, human immunodeficiency virus, and human papillomavirus.
By cancer type, the proportion of cases caused by potentially modifiable risk factors ranged from 100% for cervical cancer to 4.9% for ovarian cancer.
