Scientists have discovered ancient viruses that were unknown to science in Himalayan glaciers, revealing a potential link between climate change and viral evolution.
Recent reports have revealed that researchers have found almost 1,700 ancient virus species hidden within the Himalayas’ glacial ice.
The researchers are most likely to analyze the DNA of these ancient viruses and dig into how viruses can adapt to changes in climate. As of now, they are gathering as much information as possible while they still can get hold of it. The ice cores were sampled at the Guliya Glacier which is located in the Himalayas in northwest Tibet, which is around 4 miles above sea level. Siberia has been home to ancient viruses that have been frozen in permafrost. Some researchers have expressed the apprehension that one of these viruses could likely infect humans, as they melt around the world due to climate change.
Professor Lonnie Thompson noted that science is a new tool which can help answer basic climate questions. The professor added that researching life in frozen glacial ice cores.
