Westworld may have ended in 2022, but Thandiwe Newton's partnership with HBO is far from over now that she's been cast in a brand-new TV show. Newton played Maeve Millay on Westworld, a four-season sci-fi drama about rich guests who visit a theme park with realistic androids.
The show may have been critically acclaimed and won multiple awards, but it was shockingly canceled after only four seasons. The award-winning actress moved on to other projects, but she has yet to return to HBO—until now. Newton, Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa, Shameless' Maxine Peake and Halo's Danny Sapani have all joined the cast of HBO's upcoming drama First Day on Earth, which will also star Michaela Coel, according to Deadline. The 10-episode debut season of First Day on Earth has already started filming, with Newton playing a character named Anya. Meanwhile, Gatwa, Peake and Sapani have been cast as Darren, Helen and Ernest, respectively. The series stars Coel as an author named Henri who leaves the comfortable and familiar world she knows so well behind to visit her ancestral homeland of Ghana. There, she finds a new purpose in life, and brand-new relationships and friendships. Not everything is coming up roses, though, because lurking around every corner are secrets and lies that force her to question the perception she has of her own family. Coel is not only the star of First Day on Earth, but she's also the creator, writer, a director and an executive producer on the TV drama. The producing team includes Sam Miller, Jesse Armstrong, Phil Clarke, Roberto Troni, Jo McClellan and Johann Knobel. Miller has also signed on as a director. Like with Newton, First Day on Earth serves as an HBO reunion for Coel as well, as she previously created and starred in the series I May Destroy You, which earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. After Westworld ended, Newton went on to star in movies like God's Country and had voice roles in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Mufasa: The Lion King. On the small screen, she's had a recurring role on Human Resources and guest-starred on Wednesday. The actress' role in the 2005 film Crash earned her a SAG Award and a BAFTA, and she won an Emmy for Westworld. It's been almost four years since Westworld's cancellation, but Newton is back at HBO as filming continues for First Day on Earth.
