A 4-year-old leukemia patient celebrated her birthday with a police therapy dog at the San Marcos Police Department , fulfilling her wish after developing an interest in therapy dog s during hospital treatments. Taryn , diagnosed with leukemia in 2023, celebrated her fourth birthday on July 18 with Sophie , the department's therapy dog . The young girl's fascination with therapy dog s began during her hospital treatments.
"Taryn is at the age where she notices police officers and understands they are here to keep everyone safe," her father, Andrew, said. Officer Joyce Bender, Sophie's handler, helped organize the event after Taryn's parents reached out to the department. "It touches my heart to see the work of therapy dogs inside and outside of the public safety space," Bender said.
During her visit, Taryn explored the police department, met the police chief and received unicorn-themed gifts from staff members. The highlight of her day was spending time with Sophie.
