There is no organized fire department in Selawik. When residents of the community learned of the early morning fire, they tried to put it out using snow and shovels.

A team of deputy fire marshals sent from Anchorage found the remains of four people, including two children, following the Tuesday fire, the Alaska Department of Public Safety reported Wednesday. The department said the remains are believed to belong to Fred Cleveland, 49; Racienda Russell, 33; a 6-year-old child; and a 4-year-old child. The department said next of kin have been notified.
