Reverse storytelling goes back even before Memento

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Christopher Nolan’s breakout hit Memento felt groundbreaking in its time for narrating its entire storyline in reverse order, taking first-time viewers by surprise. Based on the short story Memento Mori by his brother Jonathan Nolan, the 2000 psychological thriller followed the disturbed life of Guy Pearce’s Leonard Shelby, an insurance investigator with short-term memory loss.

For its visionary storytelling, Memento earned Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing nods at the Oscars. Memento proved its filmmaker’s abilities at playing around with time. Be it the multiple timelines converging in Dunkirk or time being literally reversed in Tenet, the concept of time has cemented itself as one of the cliches in almost every Christopher Nolan movie.

Betrayal Based on Harold Pinter’s play of the same name, Betrayal goes back in time to piece together a seven-year-long extramarital affair. Patricia Hodge stars as art gallery owner Emma while Ben Kingsley plays her publisher husband Robert. The central focus of Betrayal lies on Emma’s affair with her husband’s friend, Jerry, played by Jeremy Irons.

Peppermint Candy Through internationally-renowned human dramas like Burning and Poetry, Lee Chang-Dong established himself as one of the best Korean directors of all time. Released in 1998 before the director had achieved mainstream popularity, Peppermint Candy incorporated reverse chronology to tell the eventful tale of a suicidal middle-aged man. As he decides to take the final step in the very first scene, a freeze-frame recounts his last two decades in six chapters.

The protagonist Kim Yong-ho’s changing moods from 1979 to 1999 also mirror the changes in his native country, ranging from the authoritarian military regime and student demonstrations of the 1980s to the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. Hitting theaters just a year before Memento, Peppermint Candy proved how narrating the plot backward can be dramatic enough if executed well. In Memento, audiences were still left to guess who Shelby’s wife’s killer was till the very end.
