Jurassic Park is one of Steven Spielberg's most iconic movies, but other directors came close to making it, and it may have looked very different.

Jurassic Park is one of the most iconic adventure movies ever made, and it was fantastically brought to life by Steven Spielberg, but four other high-profile directors almost directed it instead. Spielberg is known for his technically advanced filmmaking, his ability to inspire awe, and bringing sentimentality to high-concept movies about aliens and monsters. Jurassic Park is the culmination of all of those elements.

Burton is known for his eccentrically gothic style, which would have been a strange fit for an island located close to Hawaii. While that style might have been jarring, it'd have been interesting to see Michael Keaton as Grant and Johnny Depp as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Instead of John Williams' classic score, it could have featured a jangly, cabaret-like piano composition from frequent Burton collaborator Danny Elfman.

Donner and Spielberg had a close working relationship, and Donner even directed The Goonies, a story created by Spielberg and produced by Amblin Entertainment. The two directors both made family-friendly adventure movies in the 1980s, but Donner's Jurassic Park may have been more practical-effects-heavy. Donner directed Scrooged, which is full of remarkable puppetry, and the edited-out killer octopus has become a Goonies legend.
