Espresso tonic is exactly what it sounds like — espresso, tonic water and occasional embellishments — and it’s the hottest cold drink around. Here’s where to find it now.
After several overly-caffeinated cafe visits in the name of journalism, here’s our take on some of the best espresso tonics to try before these sunny days dissipate.The “Wokeland” coffee drink at Awaken Cafe & Roasting is made with espresso, tonic and housemade lime cordial.
Named after its Woakland coffee blend, this cafe’s Woakland Espresso & Tonic is refreshingly balanced thanks to its housemade lime syrup. Made with lime, sugar and citric acid, the cordial harmonizes nicely with the polished espresso — and the brew is served stirred, so the lime cordial doesn’t get lost at the bottom. It’s a neat, accessible entryway into espresso tonics that gives equal weight to the water, coffee, and sweetener – not an easy feat.
Owner Cortt Dunlap says the coffee house began serving the drink four years ago, after he spotted versions of it online and at other specialty cafes. Back then, their espresso tonic was intended only for the fall season, and it featured just a hint of lime juice instead of syrup. It’s now a cult favorite — and a permanent menu item.Open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and until 7 p.m.
This season’s take — the Santa Clara Sunrise — adds a honeyed African rooibos tea to the mix. It’s an untraditional approach to espresso tonics, but the tea’s fruity, floral notes soften the sharpness of the other ingredients. Consider it an olive branch to those who prefer sweetness and are looking to join the fun.
Unabashedly eccentric, the Santa Clara Sunrise is precisely what coffee lovers still on the fence about espresso tonics – particularly young people – will appreciate.Open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, with locations in San Jose, Santa Clara and Cupertino;
