The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released its first nationally representative data on the LGBTQIA+ community, finding that 4.5% of Australians, or over 910,000 people, identify as LGBTQIA+. The data, collected from four national surveys, highlights the young age structure of the LGBTQIA+ population, with twice the representation among those aged 16 to 24 compared to the overall population. The ACT has the highest proportion of LGBTQIA+ residents (5.6%), followed by South Australia and Western Australia.

Around 4.5 per cent of the Australia n population identifies as LGBTQIA+ , according to new data from the Australia n Bureau of Statistics .

For the first time, the Australian Bureau of Statistics used data from four national surveys to determine the size and characteristics of the LGBTQIA+ community. The data comes off the back of heated debate about whether questions on sexuality should be included in the Australian census.A single question about sexuality doesn't encompass the LGBTQI+ community's complexity and diverse needs, experts and advocates say.

"Another way of interpreting this data is that six out of 10 LGBTQIA+ people are aged between 16 and 34 years, and 8 per cent are age 65 years and over."
