Dawn Derbin wants to know what happened to her son in life and in death.
“I just wanted to know my sons last words,” she told 19 News in an exclusive interview. “And if he was being cared for the way I would have cared for him. Was somebody with him?” Euclid officer Jacob Derbin was less than 10 feet away from his fellow officers before he was ambushed by Deshawn Vaughn in the driveway of a home on the 300 block of East 211th Street on May 11, 2024.
Three Euclid patrol officers responded to the 211th Street home for reports of felon Deshawn Vaughn threatening the mother of his children. When Derbin and two other patrol officers arrived on scene, they interviewed the woman who owned the home, who stepped out onto a side porch to speak to the officers. In new body-camera footage obtained by 19 News, officers interviewed the grandmother of the victim as they looked over the outside of the home from the driveway.“Can I go in your backyard and look?” Officer Derbin asked the grandmother. The second Officer Derbin steps beyond the perimeter of the home, Vaughn allegedly shot Officer Derbin in his bullet proof vest. Officer Derbin pulled out his own weapon and fired four shots toward Vaughn before additional bullets brought him down. As the sound of gunshots rang out on 211th Street, one of the other patrol officers also fired his weapon toward Vaughn and Officer Derbin. According to a summary of the incident Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation gave a grand jury, 24 bullets were recovered from around the home on May 11.Two of the bullets Vaughn fired were recovered from Derbin’s body, according to the BCI. Nine of the bullets were recovered from the driveway or sidewalk at the home. One of the bullets was recovered from Officer Derbin’s vest.Six of the bullet casings the officer fired were recovered near the driveway of the home. Two “projectiles” were also recovered near the driveway, according to the BCI.The footage shows another patrol officer run to the front of the home to get cover.Vaughn ran from the scene after the shots were fired. Dozens of officers and the BCI were eventually called to the scene that night, with K-9s and drones tracking Vaughn’s movements, according to the police report. The officer who shot his weapon eight times toward Vaughn spoke with the other officer on scene. The officers continued speaking about where the shots came from in the footage.“No, I never seen him,” the other officer responded. On that body-camera footage, the officer keeps repeating he never saw the suspect...but he still shot his service weapon “in the area.” A release from Euclid Police on May 12, 2024 confirmed officers returned fire. The release did not say if the officer were placed on leave. The Euclid Police Manual is not clear about leave for an officer who discharged his weapon, but does say, “Where use of force resulted in injury, the Commanding Officer, upon approval of the Chief of Police or his designee, may assign the officer to duties other than a field assignment until conclusion of the investigation and a determination of the facts.” 19 News has reached out to Euclid Police for more information regarding the details of the officer’s actions and if he was placed on leave following the shooting. Euclid Police did not respond.Dawn Derbin was on Edgewater Beach when she got the call telling her to get to the hospital.Doctors and officers took Dawn and her family to a room where she looked at her son’s body through glass paneling.Dawn was numb and already, questions piled up in her brain. “I was not able to hold him my sons hand to kiss his warm cheek. I couldn’t be with him,” Dawn said. “We had to look at him hours later through a glass hospital room and that alone, if I knew it was going to end up, I would have broke right through.” Dawn wanted answers on how her son died and how his death could be prevented in the future. When different officials gave her different answers, she did what she had to do to get the“I did what nobody should have to do...ordered my sons autopsy,” Dawn Derbin told 19 News. “Because that was where I would get a definitive answer, right?”The medical examiner determined Officer Derbin had seven gunshot wounds. The autopsy said the bullets hit Officer Derbin from multiple different angles and also went in different directions.Jacob’s last words: Dawn Derbin fights to learn more about Euclid officer’s final moments: Part 2The report the BCI gave a grand jury said two of the bullets Vaughn shot were recovered from Officer Derbin’s body.
