3D-printed resin ‘shocks’ scientists with rubber-like flex, plastic-like strength

Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin have developed a fast and precise 3D printing method using resins that can seamlessly merge soft and hard properties into a single object using different light colors.The inspiration behind this breakthrough is the ability of nature to create rigid structures like human bones, surrounded by pliable cartilage. These natural structures are known to have elegant and precise geometric properties.

“That gives us a much stronger connection between the soft and hard parts, and there can be a gradual transition if we want.”A simple demonstrationPage and co showed how the system works by printing a small, working knee joint with soft ligaments and hard bones that moved together smoothly. They also made a sample stretchable electronic device with a gold wire on a strip. Some parts could bend and stretch, while a stiffer area kept the circuit from breaking.
