Salt Lake City police responded to reports of a two-car crash at 400 South State Street around 11:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.

Upon arrival, officers found two heavily damaged vehicles blocking the roadway. They located the critically injured man in one of the cars, and he was transported to a nearby hospital. Police stated that it appeared he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Investigators believe the man ran a red light while heading eastbound on 400 South, striking another vehicle traveling north on State Street.

The crash forced the closure of the intersection and disrupted TRAX service for several hours. No one else was injured in the collision. Detectives are working to determine if impairment or excessive speed were contributing factors. The SLCPD’s Collision Analysis & Reconstruction team and Crime Lab technicians responded to the scene.
