Penn State's Shayne Van Ness, a Blair alum, had one of the highest-scoring tech falls you'll ever see.
Immaculata head coach Rodney Van Ness during the Cranford vs Immaculata wrestling match in Cranford, NJ on Tuesday, December 17, 2024His son, Shayne, the nation’s top-ranked 149-pounder, was quickly down 7-1 to Maryland’s Carter Young through one period.
Young was seemingly about to do the impossible against one of Penn State’s top wrestlers. Young went up early as he took Van Ness to his back and locked him in a standing cradle, securing him the three points for the takedown plus four nearfall points. “There was obviously, a big roar when he got the take down and backs,” Rodney said of the atmosphere in College Park, Maryland when Young scored first. But the elder Van Ness, who’s currently in his third season as head coach at Immaculata, wasn’t worried.Shayne — a two-time prep national champion at Blair and two-time All-American for Penn State — registered 10 takedowns en route to one of the wildest and highest scoring wins you’ll see. He more than staved off the upset. He wound up with a 31-15 tech fall as No. 1 Penn State cruised to a 51-0 victory over Maryland on Jan. 24.“I’ve seen him score a lot of points before, and he’s been down in bigger scenarios and down by more in the NCAA’s and came back to win. So when that happens, or has happened in the past, I’ve learned to bet on my guy,” the elder Van Ness said. “Don’t bet against him. No matter where he’s at in the match, he can put a lot of points on the board at any time.” Young’s early lead was enough to rile up the Maryland fans even as Penn State fans outnumbered them in College Park. But Van Ness’s comeback quickly took the air out of the XFinity Center, dashing any hopes at an upset. “It quieted up quick. The opponent was visibly worn, and I knew it was a matter of time. So the crowd, I guess, got the same sentiment and kind of quieted up,” Van Ness said. “The majority of crowd was a Penn State crowd, so the Maryland crowd started to quiet up and just take what was coming. And the Penn State crowd started to get louder and louder with each win.” It was the seventh tech fall of the season for Van Ness, who conceded more points in that bout than he has at any point in his career, including in any loss. Rodney, himself a former collegiate standout and among the winningest wrestlers in Rutgers history, wasn’t bothered that his son gave up 15 points in the win, either. In fact, he said his son is particularly well suited to wrestle in these types of high scoring matches where he may even trail at times. “A type of calm comes over me after he gives up the first score,” Rodney said. “I’d rather him not give up seven, but a takedown here and there, that just helps me to settle in and know that he’s going to start wrestling and do what he does best. He knows that when you wrestle, sometimes points are going to be scored for you or against you, and then you just keep wrestling and you work on scoring again or scoring the next point.”A lifelong Bergen County resident, Jake Aferiat joined the NJ.com high school sports staff in September 2022. A 2021 graduate of Penn State University, Jake spent all four years at Penn State's student...
