Old photos capture 1993 memorial for Texas pro wrestling legend

On April 2, 1993, Chronicle reporter Evan Moore and photographer Paul S. Howell went to Dallas' storied Sportatorium, that city's longtime home for professional wrestling.That night, the Sportatorium was hosting a benefit memorial for the children of wrestler Kerry Von Erich, a member of the famed Von Erich wrestling family of North Texas. The fan favorite had died by suicide that February, the fifth Von Erich brother who would die prematurely.

The last surviving brother, Kevin Von Erich, would headline the night's matches. At ringside was the patriarch of the Von Erich clan, Fritz Von Erich.Paul S.
