Why the Aztecs would play at 9 p.m. Friday, will teams press them and who is coach/player of the year

The second semifinal at the 2017 Mountain West Tournament was scheduled to tip at 9:30 p.m. but, because of delays in the “early” game, was closer to 10. Colorado State beat SDSU, then had to play the final — the Rams’ third game in three days — less than 15 hours later .

The Aztecs know. They drew the dreaded 3 seed this week, which means the late game on both Thursday and Friday, then the short turnaround to the 3 p.m. final Saturday if they win them. CBS Sports, which airs both semis, moved the late game to 8:30 p.m. for the final three years of the old contract after the uproar about 9:30 in 2017. The new contract began in 2020-21, and it went to 9.

The Aztecs have been increasingly effective extending their defense across midcourt, a key factor in several recent wins, but Saturday the Air Jordan was suddenly on the other foot. A 17-point lead inside eight minutes to go dwindled to one, thanks to six turnovers in the final four minutes against Nevada’s full-court press.

“I told them we had three timeouts and the next jump ball. You tell them that, but you get out there and it’s a whole different ballgame when they trap you and they’ve got hands waving and you try to throw it crosscourt or you dribble in traffic when you should have picked it up.”
