Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the state’s top cop, did not trust law enforcement, a former top deputy testified Monday morning.
Among the most startling revelations Monday morning was that Paxton, who is Texas’ top law enforcement officer,
Mark Penley, who served as the deputy attorney general for criminal justice under Paxton for one year, said testimony on Mondy that the attorney general’s mistrust camefrom his own experiences.for more than eight years — his entire time as attorney general. That case has not gone to trial due to years of delays in the courts. Paxton appeared to be sympathetic to Nate Paul’s accusations that the FBI had treated him unfairly, Penley testified.
Paul is the real estate investor at the core of the impeachment trial. House impeachment managers have accused Paxton of abusing his office to help Paul.AdvertisementPaxton wanted Penley and other top aides to investigate Paul’s accusations, which alleged a conspiracy between the FBI, Texas Department of Public Safety, a federal judge and a U.S. Attorney, witnesses testified.Patrick, who is serving as the judge in the trial, announced Monday that senators could begin deliberations by Thursday.
After that, they will each have one hour to rebut evidence and then one hour each to make closing arguments.Whistleblowers meeting with FBIin September 2020, Penley testified.
