The big end-of-the-summer sale weekend is here. Here’s what to buy and what to keep on your list until Black Friday.
I can’t believe I’m sitting down to write about Labor Day sales. Feels like just yesterday the phrase “kicking off the summer” was appearing in most of my pre–Memorial Day sale stories — yet here we are at the other bookend already. That said, I am happy to share some good news: Summer isn’t really over until mid-September, and Labor Day brings some pretty great sales with it.
DO: Buy summer clothing and gear “With summer winding down, it’s a great time to shop for warm weather clothing. Many retailers will take up to 60% off, although some will offer even better discount,” says Julie Ramhold, consumer analyst with DealNews.com. If you’re planning to shop in-person this weekend, when you go may determine how much good stuff you’ll actually find, says money-saving expert Andrea Woroch.
DO: Buy large appliances Ramhold notes that, on average, big-ticket appliance items max out at 40% off every Labor Day. “That said, we’ve already seen Home Depot knocking up to 63% off this year and the actual holiday weekend is still a week away,” she adds. The reason? Pandemic-fueled overstocking is likely to have affected large appliance prices, too, Woroch says: “Stores need to move excess appliances since they are costly to store in warehouses.
DON’T: Buy TVs Now is not the time to find the best prices on TVs. For that, it may also be best to wait until November. “There may be some TV deals in Labor Day sales, but, unless you want a new set now, you’re better off waiting until Black Friday — that’s when we’ll see a bigger selection and wider range of discounts in general,” says Ramhold.
