Jax State will host Western Kentucky in the Conference USA championship game on Friday at Burgess-Snow Field at AmFirst Stadium. Before that, here are three takeaways from the Gamecocks’ narrow loss in the regular-season finale.
The loss was handed to the Gamecocks after a 50-yard field goal from WKU kicker Lucas Carneiro gave the Hilltoppers the two-point lead with just three seconds left to play.
Jacksonville State had done a good job improving its third-down success after a horrific start in that category, but those struggles crept back up in Saturday’s loss to the Hilltoppers, along with tough goes on first down. The Gamecocks were held to just 13 first downs in the entire game, which marked a season low; the previous mark was 19 against Coastal Carolina in the season opener.
