First responders in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, helped rescue a 3-month-old bald eagle after it had fallen from its nest. Lampeter Fire Company No. 1 shared on social media on Sunday, May 17, that they, along with Lafayette Fire Company and West Lampeter Township Police, assisted in the rescue. After a fishing hook was removed from its beak and it received a clean bill of health, members of the three organizations assisted in returning the eagle to its nest.
"Thanks to everyone involved with the seamless operation, the eagle is safely back home and momma and its sibling are taking very well," said the Lampter Fire Company. According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, both male and female bald eagles build the nest, but the female chooses the nest tree, and both will defend the nest territory.
The young will stay in the nest about 11 to 12 weeks, and then the adults will start encouraging them to fly. Although no longer listed as endangered or threatened, in Pennsylvania, bald eagles are protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Protection Treaty Act.
