In an interview with FOX10 News, he added: “We spent the first six or seven months of my receivership pulling together the information we need to do to do the evaluation, and establishing what criteria we’re gonna use. Now moving forward, you know, we’ll take a look at each option and see which best fits the needs of customers or Prichard and Chickasaw.”The first option is what Young calls the “status quo.
The last option would involve MAWSS absorbing the entire system. The utility, which sells water to the Prichard system, nearly did that more than a decade ago when voters approved the merger in a referendum. But the Prichard water board at the time, which opposed the move, entered into a contract with a management firm called Severn Trent Services. That would have cost MAWSS more than $30 million over five years, so the utility backed away from the merger.
Another study indicated that it is feasible to dig wells to produce the system’s owner water supply, which would allow it to save money it spends buying water from MAWSS. But he said the state environmental agency will not grant drilling permits before it addresses other problems.
